Tackling Scope 3 emissions through supplier collaboration

Our mission is to help the food and drink industry transform as we cannot simply maintain “business-as-usual” food value chains, which produce around a third of planet-warming greenhouse gas emissions worldwide.

Just seven agricultural commodities – cattle, palm oil, soy, cocoa, rubber, coffee, and wood fibre – drive more than half of tree cover loss, and lead to the most greenhouse gas emissions.

Delivering positive change by collaborating with the supply chain is a huge gain yet food businesses are not on track to meet their own decarbonisation targets – how many products are you producing sourced from these commodities?

Working with the supply chain to decarbonise can decrease companies’ environmental impact, create value by reducing costs, grow market share, and enable the building of new green businesses.

The drivers of Scope 3 emissions differ for each organisation and product, which means that each company needs to take its own approach in engaging with their suppliers, distributors, and customers. And we all know this is not simple, because food value chains are complex and fragmented.

In our experience at Future Food Movement, successful supplier collaborations actively promote value chain transparency, offer decarbonisation incentives, and are founded on thoughtful efforts to build capabilities and establish effective program governance.
