Upskilling

Insights from our latest Accelerator programme

Over the last six weeks, participants from Future Food Movement’s latest CPD-certified Accelerator programme have been busy developing their climate skills, gaining powerful knowledge and building valuable connections with others in the food industry.

We’ve had some fantastic feedback from our latest cohort, with participants acknowledging the importance of empowerment through learning and community collaboration in their journeys to becoming #missionaligned.

In the programme’s latest close-out session, FFM Coach Rob Iles spent some time chatting with the group on their Accelerator experience. Here are 5 key takeaways on how they found the programme.

1. Manageable and enjoyable

Participants found the programme manageable in terms of the time and effort required, and enjoyed the opportunity to dig deeper into topics they are interested in.

I came into this as a fairly blank sheet, to be honest, but the different modules have really opened my eyes to what’s out there.

2. enables growth and learning

The participants found the programme valuable in enabling growth and learning.

A lot of businesses need upskilling in this, so one of my key takeaways has been thinking about how I can facilitate that. I can’t just be one person trying to drive it – reaching that bit further makes a much bigger impact.

3. a climate skills gap exists, and we are here to fill it

Accelerators say the programme made them realise just how much there is to consider in their company’s sustainability journey and that it’s clear that some companies – those that haven’t yet made sustainability a priority – have a long way to go on education and action.

Participants say the Accelerator helped identify knowledge gaps they didn’t realise they had and that it brought together businesses facing the same challenges.

It’s really helpful to hear what issues other businesses are facing.

The programme reinforced the idea that leaders within a business absolutely must have a basic understanding of sustainability and their company’s approach to it.

It would be great if there was a certain level of knowledge within a business. That would cut a lot of the noise coming to the sustainability team. Ideally, we’d have a Champions Network within the business, with all Champions undertaking this programme.

Upskilling, upskilling, upskilling across the workforce is vital to ensure sustainability teams aren’t overloaded.

4. connects the dots and points you in the right direction

Participants have taken away a new understanding of the interconnectedness of things and where are the key areas to make change.

The course has really helped me connect things together. I’m now seeing the links between human rights and then climate and net zero, and just understanding that it is all very connected.

I work in a really challenging environment which clashes with my own compass, so understanding where we can make the biggest difference and make a change is important.

One of the hardest things we have to do at the moment is prioritise our projects in the right order, so the work we did on marginal abatement has been really useful.

5. we can’t compete on climate

The Accelerator opens your eyes to the fact that climate action needs to be collaborative.

We’re all on the same journey, we can’t compete on climate.
