MEMBERS JOINED US FOR AN UPDATE ON THE LATEST DEVELOPMENTS ON THE EU REGULATION ON DEFORESTATION-FREE SUPPLY CHAINS WITH FFM COACH CAROLINE MASON, EMER FARDY FROM BUSINESS MEMBER HILTON FOODS, AND INDUSTRY EXPERT ROSE MCCULLOCH FROM EFECA
This session helped members gain insights into the latest developments on the EU Regulation on deforestation-free supply chains.
The main driver of this Regulation is the expansion of deforestation and forest degradation due to the production of commodities like soy, beef, palm oil, wood, cocoa, coffee, rubber and some of their derived products, such as leather, chocolate, tyres, or furniture. The EU is taking responsibility as a major consumer market of these commodities and wants to lead the way to solving this issue.
By promoting the consumption of ‘deforestation-free’ products and reducing the EU’s impact on global deforestation and forest degradation, the new Regulation is expected to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and biodiversity loss.
This session explored the practical implications of the new regulation, now and going forward.FFM coach Caroline Mason, Emer Fardy from business member Hilton Foods, and industry expert Rose McCulloch from Efeca with Kate Cawley shared insights, best practice, and innovative approaches to collaborating with your supply chain, reducing your scope 3 emissions impact, and repairing nature degradation.
Rose is a Senior Consultant at Efeca, a B Corp certified natural resources consultancy providing advice and support to Government and the private sector on forest risk commodities and responsible sourcing. Through her role as the programme manager of the UK Sustainable Commodities Initiative, Rose works with large food and drink companies operating across the UK supply chain. Rose has also worked to establish and facilitate the UK Soy Manifesto, an industry-led group of nearly 50 companies representing 60+% of the UK’s consumption of soy, which has committed to ensuring that all soy consumed in the UK is deforestation and conversion free no later than the end of 2025. Membership of the Manifesto spans the entire UK supply chain from feed mills, major meat and dairy producers, processors, manufacturers and leading grocery retailers, restaurants, and brands.
Emer is Group Head Of Sustainability & Human Rights at Hilton Foods and leads a team of specialists developing and delivering their Sustainable Protein Plan across their global operations. This plan covers people, planet and product. Prior to this she was an agriculture manager at Tesco responsible for the pig meat supply chain from conception to slaughter, animal welfare reporting and responsible antibiotic use across species. Emer is currently a board member of the ERBS, is on the governance board for the UK Soy Manifesto and is on the Stakeholder Advisory Board for the Animal Research Network.
Caroline is an expert in sustainable supply chain collaboration and action. With over 20 years of experience working and travelling across global food systems she has worked with some of the UK’s largest food retailers including the Co-op and Waitrose, fostering collaborative relationships from oceans and soils to fork.
