This is an emergency! Ultra-processed foods make 60% of calories in British diet

This is an emergency! Dr Chris Van Tulleken was on Channel 4 news last night explaining how ultra-processed foods can make up 70-100% of a young person, teen or baby’s calories and is the main cause of the obesity epidemic in the UK.

With ultra-processed foods making up most of the British diet, it is currently not easy to live without ultra-processed foods, as Dr Chris Van Tulleken explains, so we need to make “real food” cheaper and more affordable.

How can regulation change this? Some of Dr Chris Van Tulleken’s suggestions are:

  • The affected communities should start demanding action
  • Retailers need to make the effects of ultra-processed food clearer on packaging
  • Teach the effects of ultra-processed foods at school
  • Start health campaigns and everyone get behind the movement.

“This is gentle stuff for what is the leading cause of early death. For context, this is an emergency. 1 in 5 kids in primary school are living with obesity.” – Dr Chris Van Tulleken.
