Welcoming Lara Hanlon, a new Future Food Movement coach specialising in systems thinking and inspiring changemakers to think outside their traditional roles to create a bigger positive impact for the future for our industry.
Many people we meet in the food industry want to help create a greener future, but struggle with understanding how their role fits into this equation. The climate crisis challenges us with one of the most complex system problems ever faced in food production.
But by looking at this challenge through fresh eyes we can bring about transformative business models, new technologies, new policy frameworks, and most importantly, new ways of engaging with each other. Taking on this complex systems problem — where every activity related to food production has an effect on climate change while being affected by it at the same time — requires addressing multiple interconnected issues simultaneously without causing additional damage. It’s no easy feat!
Lara is an award-winning design strategist, educator and facilitator, and through her organisation Portion Collaborative, she helps food businesses reimagine our food systems, including processes, technologies, and services. Having facilitated design thinking engagements for Unilever, Walmart, Coca Cola, McDonald’s, CVS, and PepsiCo, Lara realised that we need more strategic, efficient and diverse thinking at management and board level to help fix our broken food system. You can watch Lara’s TEDx talk on her multi-award-winning “éntomo” project that used design methodologies to encourage Western society to embrace insects as a sustainable food source here
