There are many factors limiting investment in food system transformation, from the cost of finance to skills shortages and regulatory uncertainty.

But one thing is for sure: most businesses have the resource and ability to influence a growing groundswell of citizen demand for healthy, sustainable food, ultimately moving the market.

This groundswell has already started – a joint study by McKinsey and NielsenIQ found that products with ESG claims grew by 28% over five years, compared to 20% for those without, whilst the Fairtrade Foundation reports that 69% of UK adults bought Fairtrade products last year.

To truly shift behaviours and disrupt weekly meal routines – whether at home or dining out – could communications and marketing teams shape demand to meet both short-term sales targets and long-term ESG goals?
