Our latest BIG QUESTION is:

What does “Better Meat” mean to you?

We’re delivering exclusive industry insights, thinking and initiatives from Farmers, Youth, Experts and Trailblazers directly to our community to unlock innovation and growth

Our Veriscope ESG Intelligence insight includes a Climate Checkpoint on Meat, and most recently touched on how defining ‘better meat’ is more nuanced that often portrayed.

An intensively-reared chicken, for example, will generally produce fewer emissions than a free-range, slower growing one, but what about the welfare and pollution issues that hang over the former?

A recent World Resources Institute (WRI) report  suggests that companies should consider the following:

  • Calculate the “scope 3” GHG emissions baseline of your food purchases, including meat.
  • Shift from high-emissions products like beef and lamb toward lower-emissions products like plant-based foods and alternative proteins.
  • Define meat sourcing priorities by-product (e.g. lower emissions beef, higher-welfare chicken).
  • Assess the potential environmental impacts of the new sourcing strategy on climate and other “better” meat priority goals.
  • If a “better” meat sourcing strategy increases environmental impacts, shift to sourcing “even less meat.”
  • Engage with suppliers to improve practices and track progress.

For the second time, we’ve brought together diverse voices and perspectives to inspire action and give our community unique viewpoints on the issues that matter. The Big Question Project helps members to to locks innovation to address a spectrum of climate concerns, challenges, and triumphs from Farmers, Youth, Experts and Trailblazers.
