UK & NET ZERO ICYMI, a YouGov poll revealed that 74% of the UK back the shift to net zero. What a great way to energise us as we re-start after the summer (The Independent, 12 August).
The more sobering stat of the summer is that 55% of corporate sustainability teams do not believe they are adequately resourced to deliver against increased reporting frameworks and disclosure requests (edie, 28 August)
MORE TALK ON LESS In the UK, the Guardian called for ‘more boldness around dietary changes’ (21 August) which received a direct response from the NFU (27 August). While over the summer, Austria became the latest EU country to develop national dietary guidelines that incorporate climate impact and recommend limiting meat consumption, and the Dutch government’s decision against implementing a tax on meat products in 2021 was found to be based on a one-sided, biased report according to a report by Follow the Money.
Staying in Europe, the EU has approved a €700M Dutch scheme for small/medium livestock producers in priority environmental areas to voluntarily close their farms and help improve the quality of the environment (Green Queen, 19 August).
Closer to home, the Welsh beef industry is recruiting farmers for a pilot project to examine how a reduced rearing period could cause less greenhouse gas emissions. (Food Manufacture, 14 August)
PROTEIN FOR THE PLANET A study revealed that plant-based meat alternatives are eco-friendlier and mostly healthier than their animal counterparts, but for a truly healthy and sustainable diet non-processed foods such as beans and pulses need to be prioritised (Food Foundation, 28 August). While the launch of the £38m National Alternative Protein Innovation Centre will support research and innovation into various forms of alternative protein, from plants and microbes to insects and algae.
