UK GOVERNMENT After the 4th July election, an outline of the Labour government’s plans were provided in the King’s speech. Key inclusions that caught our eye were junk food advertising/energy drink sales, the focus on child wellbeing and the launch of Great British Energy (Food Manufacture, 17 July).

We’ve also noted the movement of expertise into government such as Emily Miles returning to Defra as director general of food, biosecurity and trade (from FSA) (Food Manufacture, 10 July) and we note Henry Dimbleby could be set for a return to government too (The Grocer, 18 July).

Meanwhile, the rollout of payment schemes is causing ‘widespread uncertainty and risks’ for farmers warns the National Audit Office, at a time when extreme weather are contributing to immense pressure for farms (The Independent, 23 July).
