Ask the Expert: Food Systems in a Climate Crisis

SYSTEMS THINKING IS A WAY OF LOOKING HOLISTICALLY AT A SYSTEM AND ALL OF ITS PARTS. THE APPROACH ALLOWS US TO UNDERSTAND HOW THE INDIVIDUAL PIECES OF A SYSTEM RELATE AND INTERACT WITH EACH OTHER WITHIN THE CONTEXT OF THE WHOLE ENVIRONMENT THEY ARE PART OF.

When it comes to food, we know that our food system is incredibly complex. Organisations, products, and services are only part of our food system. Other factors such as climate, technology, culture, and economics are huge influencers in our food system. By taking a systems approach, we can analyse how different drivers, factors, people, and parts are connected. This offers us a completely new perspective and provides us with an opportunity to establish new patterns and behaviours needed to achieve systemic transformation.

Following a brief introduction to systems thinking, you will then have the opportunity to ask Lara any questions to understand more, or maybe even seek advise on this very complex systems challenge – it’s no easy feat!

A BIT MORE ABOUT LARA

Lara Hanlon is one of our newest Future Food Movement coaches. With a unique specialism in systems thinking, Lara has facilitated design thinking engagements for Unilever, Walmart, Coca Cola, McDonald’s, CVS, and PepsiCo and has found that looking at the world – or an organisation – through a systems thinking lens, we can start to break down its complexity, build stronger relationships, identify opportunities for innovation, and begin to change how the overall system functions.

WHAT IS ‘ASK THE EXPERT’?

Each month we invite our Future Food Movement Allies to huddle with a climate expert. Each session will kick-off with an introduction from the expert, we then open up the floor offering a safe space place for the Ally Community to ask questions.

All Ask the Expert Huddles are recorded and available On Demand for our community to access anytime.
