New standards for the food industry: The Retailer Net Zero Collaborative Action Programme

Aldi, Lidl, the Co-op, Morrisons, Sainsbury’s, Tesco, Waitrose and Marks & Spencer join forces to tackle Scope 3 emissions across food production, transportation, and disposal. This collaboration sets a NEW STANDARDS for the food industry, where businesses are held accountable for their impact on the environment.

🌱The Retailer Net Zero Collaborative Action Programme launching today aims to standardize measurement and reporting of GHG emissions from food and drink, and drive action on high-impact areas.

🛒 The eight supermarkets, despite their size, cannot achieve #NetZero on their own, highlighting the need for systemic change across the industry they operate in.

👥 Supermarkets will collaborate with 17 important suppliers to test out WRAP’s new measurement and protocols for gauging Scope 3 (indirect) emissions.

🔍 Starting in 2024, efforts will be made to pinpoint “high-impact areas” such as food waste within specific categories or ingredients with a particularly high carbon footprint.

💼 The programme provides an opportunity for businesses to improve supply chain management and reduce costs while reducing their environmental footprint.

Don’t get left behind! What should your food and drink business be doing? If you don’t know where to start, climate learning and upskilling is key. The climate skill gap is a huge barrier to action – if you work in food, reskill, be inspired and connect with Future Food Movement.
