Farming for the Future: What Happens When We Work Together

Farming for the Future: What Happens When We Work Together

How can businesses create collaboration opportunities to strengthen the resilience of their supply chain relationships?

On a visit to Pitt’s Farm in Norfolk, we saw what’s possible when partnership leads the way. Farmer Ali Cargill, working in close collaboration with British Sugar, is creating more resilient and biodiverse farm systems, using regenerative practices and long-term thinking.

With AgriSound in-field acoustic sensors monitoring pollinator activity in real time, the team is generating data that informs better decisions on habitat, crop rotation and biodiversity.

The goal? To strengthen the IPM (Integrated Pest Management) of each crop by boosting natural pest control and reducing the need for synthetic pesticides. It’s a nature-based approach to productivity – one that improves yields, supports wildlife recovery and builds resilience from the ground up.

This is what farming for the future looks like – data-led, grounded in practice and aligned across the supply chain.

Is your business investing in this kind of change across your supply chain? We’d love to hear how.

What can businesses do to support farmers?

1. Share the risk on innovation

Co-invest in trials or offer guaranteed offtake to reduce the financial risk of adopting more sustainable practices.

2. Offer fair, stable contracts

Volatile market prices make forward planning hard. Fairer pricing, long-term agreements or sustainability-linked incentives can provide the security needed to invest in resilience.

3. Champion land stewardship

With environmental schemes like SFI being pulled, businesses can reward nature-positive practices by embedding them in procurement or recognition frameworks.

4. Get closer to the farm

Too often, decision-makers are removed from the realities of production. Stronger relationships with farmers lead to smarter, more grounded decisions across the chain.

Future Food Movement helps businesses turn intention into action – through practical upskilling, insight and on-the-ground collaboration and working groups.
